Did anyone notice in scanning these photos that, just like other un-elected leaders of the day, Nicholas had an inexplicable penchant for high, feathery hats, crimson sashes, broad epaulets and dangly medals he probably never earned? He looks like one of Sargent Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
