A while ago we took a  look at the below stairs roles of the household maid, the laundry maid and the cook, now we come to the role of the footman. Once again, we’re using the information provided by a certain Mrs William Parkes.

  1. To our modern eyes, the lives of domestic servants appear to be hard and thankless. But we have to remember that they were sought-after jobs, often providing relief from poverty outside, and offering meals, clothing, and accommodation too. No doubt some employers were also kind, if not all.
