Today – 31 July – marks one hundred years since the start of the Battle of Passchendaele (Third Battle of Ypres, 31 July – 10 November 1917), Britain’s major offensive against German forces in the Flanders region of Belgium.

I have been watching the commemorative events on TV. I have also visited those cemeteries and monuments, and found them overwhelmingly moving. Standing in the winter sunshine in Tyne Cot cemetery, tears flowing…

I bet. I cried buckets when I visited my great-uncle at the military cemetery in Etaples. The only thing that really struck me and moved me last night was when the windows of the Cloth Hall lit up with the shadows of individual soldiers. I wasn’t impressed with any of the performers, not even Mirren. And if they were real actors in Hislop’s The Wipers Times, god help us. Hislop himself would have been better!
