Despite the heavy losses here, German paratroops went on to fight with great determination and high morale, as ground troops. Many were involved at Monte Cassino, and were feared as an enemy force.

That’s for sure. I was also very struck by Nicholas Gage’s Elena and the memoir of George Psychoundakis, translated by Paddy Leigh Fermor – can’t remember its title.
