She probably didn’t take into account the speed at which a racehorse can travel and assumed they would run around her and not into her. The negative publicity for such a foolish act would not have done the suffragette movement any favours. From the film it looks like she had something in her hand that she wanted to attach to one of the horses.

You may well be right, Jean. Either way, it was a ridiculous gesture. Nevertheless, it’s a story that continues to be remembered and in that sense, I guess it serves a purpose.

Somehow jumping in front of a horse and causing your own death and severe injury to the jockey doesn’t seem a very productive way to convince people women were ready for the vote!
